18. Marathi proverbs. [मराठी म्हणी ]

१. अग अग म्हशी  मला कुठे नेशी =  “Hey”, “hey”, buffalo, where do you take me.

[Meaning = Sometimes you are forced to do the things which you do not intend to ]

२. देखल्या देवाला दंडवत = Bow to the God which is seen.

 [Meaning = Sometimes your actions are only for formality.]

३. दुरून डोंगर साजरे = Mountains are enjoyable only from far distance.

[Meaning = Sometimes, some actions seem to be very easy while watching them, but while doing them, they are really difficult .]

४. काखेत कळसा आणि गावाला वळसा  = Pot in the arms and going around the village.

[Meaning =  Some things are nearby you, but you are searching them elsewhere.]

५. आडातच नसेल तर पोहऱ्यात कोठून येईल = If there is no water in the well, how come it will be into the well bucket.

 [Meaning =  Some physical or mental abilities are passed forward  from ancestors to descendants, but when ancestor lack those abilities, then how come descendants are going to possess them. ]

६.लाथ मरीन तिथे पाणी काढीन = Wherever I kick, water will spring out there.

 [Meaning = I am so confident that whatever I will do, I will have grand success in it.]

७. देवा मला पास कर अरे देवा अभ्यास कर  = “O” God, Pass me, you moron, do study.

[Meaning = Only god blessings will not help completing any task, along with blessings you need essential effort to complete that task. ]

८. लाखाचे बारा हजार करणे = Convert, one hundred thousand to twelve thousand.

[Meaning = You intend to increase your benefit than normal limit, but due to wrong efforts you decrease your benefit even than normal limit.]

९.  अडला हरी गाढवाचे पाय धरी = God denied, hold the feet of donkey.

[Meaning = When wise person denies to help you, there is no other option than to seek a help from a stupid person]

१०. घरो घरी मातीच्याच चुली = Home to home, earthen stoves.

[Meaning = In every household the basic needs are common everywhere throughout the world.]

११. रात्रभर वाचली गीता आणि रामाची आई कोण सीता = Whole night Gita (Gita = Hindu holy scripture) is read, still you say with ignorance that sita is a mother of ram, while in reality sita is ram’s wife.

[Meaning = Even after study a lot, you are ignorant.]

१२. गाढवापुढे वाचली गीता कालचा गोंधळ बारा होता = Gita read in front of donkey is similar to yesterday’s chaos.

[Meaning = It is better to teach an ignorant one, instead of teaching a stupid one ]

१३. बाजारात तुरी अन भट भटणीला मारी = split pigeon peas are still in the market, but priest beats his wife.

[Meaning = Baby is not yet born, you don’t know whether it’s a boy or a girl and you are arguing about its name. ]

१४. अंगात नाही करणी आणि मला म्हणा तरणी = No working desire within yourself and still you want to be called as a youth.

[Meaning = You are not using your ability and still you want to be praised.]

१५. नाचता येईना अंगण वाकडे =  Unable to dance, then blame the lawn.

[Meaning = If you fail to do any task then blame the situation.]

१६. वाड्याचे तेल वांग्यावर = Oil of burger over the eggplant.

[Meaning = Boss is upset with his wife and you are the prey of his anger.]

१७. पुराणातील वांगी पुराणात = Brinjals from Puran (Puran = Hindu holy scripture) should be in Puran.

[Meaning = Some ideas from holy book can’t be implemented practically.]

१८. नका पेक्षा  मोती जड = Pearl is heavier than nose.

[Meaning = You are performing heavier task than your real ability.]

१९. सुहासनीला पापड जड = For noble lady, papad (papad = one of an Indian snacks) seems to be heavy.

[Meaning = If you are full stomach, then a little food bite seems like a food mountain to you]

२०. खाल्या घरचे वासे मोजणे = To count the beams of home which fed you.

[Meaning = To forget the help, good deeds and favours of the benevolent person who helped. ]

२१.पळसाला पाने तीनच = Forest fire tree has only tree leaves on its each branch.

[Meaning = Wherever you go in the world, the basic needs of human beings are the same everywhere.]

२२. काळ आला होता पण वेळ आली न्हवती = God of death had arrived, but my time on earth was not yet finished.

 [Meaning = I was about to die, but my fortune saved me.]

२३. पी हळद अन हो गोरी = Drink turmeric and be fair skinned.

[Meaning = You can’t expect any good result for any task instantly, for that you have to put your effort continuously for a long period.]

२४. अति  तिथे माती = More than limit creates a mud.

[Meaning = While doing anything, you must do it within the limit, otherwise over limit may ruin your efforts.]

२५. अति शहाणा त्याचा बैल रिकामा = Wits more than limit will have his bullock set free.

[Meaning = A person who calls himself a pundit is a fool in real. ]

२६. नकटीच्या लग्नाला सात्राशे विघ्न = Flat nosed bride will has hundreds of interruptions in her wedding.

[Meaning = If you have defective goods, then it’s very hard to sell them. ]

२७. घरच होत थोड त्यात व्याह्यांनी धाडल घोड = I had very much from my house and in addition my son’s father-in-law sent a horse.

[Meaning = You have too much work load and in addition, your relatives pleads to help in his work.]

२८. लोका सांगे ब्रम्हज्ञान स्वतः कोरडे पाषाण = Preaching people with eternal knowledge, but ignorant oneself.

[Meaning =  You are a chain smoker, and still preaching others, how smoking is injurious to health.]

२९. नावडतीच मीठ पण अळणी = The salt of disliked person is also devoid of saltiness.

[Meaning = If someone dislikes you, then however you try, he will never favour you.]

३०. कावळ्याच्या शापाने ढोर मरत  नाही = Cow doesn’t dies by a curse of the crow.

[Meaning = If you have no guts, then you can’t harm me. ]

३१. करून सावरून भागली अन देव पूजेला लागली = She had done enough and now became devotee of god.

[Meaning = She had done all the evil things in all his life and know in her old age, she is pretending of a noble lady. ]

३२. वासरात लंगडी गाई शहाणी = A lame cow is wiser in calves.

[Meaning = Educated persons seems to be wise among illiterate persons.]

३३. मेल्याशिवाय स्वर्ग दिसत नाही = To see the heaven, you got to die first.

[Meaning = Unless you toil hard, you may not reap the sweet fruits.]

३४. आंधळा मागतो एक डोळा अन देव देतो दोन डोळे = Blind begs for single eye, but god gives two eyes.

[Meaning = You were expecting a good luck, but you had a best luck.]

३५. देव तारी त्याला कोण मारी = God protects whoever, who can kill him.

[Meaning = If you have a godfather in your career, then nothing can stop you from the success.]

३६. करायला गेलो अन झाले दुसरेच = I tried to do one thing and another thing happened.

[Meaning = I tried do a good favour, but it turned into a bad favour.]

३७. हातच्या काकणाला आरसा कशाला = Why the mirror is needed for the bangles in the hands?

[Meaning = No proof needed for self-evident things. ]
